The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) today held its first-ever online panel interview of the applicants for the vacant position of Supreme Court Associate Justice in strict adherence to physical distancing in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Presided by no less than Chief Justice Diosdado M. Peralta, concurrent JBC ex oficio chair, the JBC interviewed Court of Appeals (CA) Justices Ramon M. Bato, Jr., Edwin D. Sorongon, Priscilla J. Baltazar-Padilla, and Nina G. Antonio-Valenzuela who are all vying for the position vacated by Justice Andres B. Reyes, Jr. who mandatorily retired this month.
Joining Chief Justice Peralta in the panel are (Ret. SC) Justice Jose Catral Mendoza, (Ret. SC) Justice d Noel G. Tijam, retired Regional Trial Court Judges Toribio Ilao, Jr. and Franklin J. Demonteverde, Sr., and Rep. Vicente S.E. Veloso III.
Except for Chief Justice Peralta who was in the SC in Padre Faura, the rest of the panelists and candidates were in their homes during the online interview.
The other candidates whose previous interviews remain valid are Court Administrator Jose Midas P. Marquez, CA Justices Manuel M. Barrios, Eduardo B. Peralta, Jr., Ramon A. Cruz, Pablito A. Perez, Japar B. Dimaampao, Ricardo R. Rosario, and Jhosep Y. Lopez, and Sandiganbayan Presiding Justice Amparo M. Cabotaje-Tang.
The JBC also announced the opening, for application or recommendation, of the position of SC Associate Justice (vice Hon. Jose C. Reyes, Jr., who will compulsorily retire on September 18 this year) and CA Presiding Justice (vice Hon. Romeo F. Barza, who compulsorily retired on August 2, 2019). ###
