September 25, 2020

Chief Justice Diosdado M. Peralta lectures online on the Revised Guidelines for Continuous Trial of Criminal Cases before newly appointed judges. The Chief Justice delivers his lecture from the Division Hearing Room in the Supreme Court New Building to the participants who participated through videoconferencing. This is CJ’s 65th lecture on the Revised Guidelines since he started giving talks on the topic when he was still an Associate Justice. A brainchild of Chief Justice Peralta when he was still an Associate Justice, the Revised Guidelines for Continuous Trial of Criminal Cases took effect on September 1, 2017 after it was piloted in 54 trial courts in Metro Manila. As then Associate Justice, he chaired the SC Special Committee on Speedy Trial. The Chief Justice said that the implementation of the Revised Guidelines has expedited the resolution of criminal cases in trial courts. The innovations and simplification introduced in the Revised Guidelines are intended to remove redundancies in criminal procedure to improve the performance of courts in terms of disposing criminal cases. The lecture is part of the Orientation Seminar for Newly-Appointed Judges organized by the Philippine Judicial Academy, the education arm of the Supreme Court. (Courtesy of the SC Public Information Office)
