Justice Marvic M.V. F. Leonen, Chairperson of the SC Committee on Gender Responsiveness in the Judiciary

March 22, 2019

Justice Marvic M.V. F. Leonen, Chairperson of the SC Committee on Gender Responsiveness in the Judiciary, urges all members of the Judiciary to take on the “unfinished challenging journey” of “achieving the kind of meaningful freedoms that do not distinguish on the basis of sex or gender.” Underscoring the liberating function of the law, Justice Leonen, during his talk titled Law In/Cultureheld at the SC En BancSession Hall on March 21, 2019, says: “Identity of any kind may be useful markers of our personal and cultural histories. They liberate us as they allow us to affiliate with our chosen collaborators in our lives’ various journeys. But we should not allow these identities to shackle us. In doing so, law can have a liberating function. It can read history more accurately, make the power relation within our culture transparent and therefore inspire our people that indeed, there is a better world that is possible.” (Caption by Annie Rose A.
