Day 1 of the 2019 Legal Education Summit

July 31, 2019

“My assumption as the 25th Chief Justice of the Philippines opened to me the grand opportunity to lead the way to the adoption of the desired paradigm shift in Philippine legal education,” Chief Justice Lucas P. Bersamin reveals as he keynotes the first day of the two-day 2019 Legal Education Summit on July 31, 2019 at the Manila Hotel. Citing his learning visit to Harvard University, Suffolk University, and Georgetown University in the United States of America in 2018, Chief Justice Bersamin pointed out that the value of change, and the need for periodic or adaptive changes can never be correctly appreciated unless and until one has been to other countries where different legal education approaches and paradigms have wrought better results. “The learning visit convinced our delegation that the current approaches to Philippine legal education were now possibly inadequate, or were even outdated, and by all means needed to be enhanced,” said the Chief Justice as he urged the participants to join the Judiciary in the implementation of the paradigm shift to skills-based and experiential legal education.
