Court of Appeals (CA) Justice Priscilla J. Baltazar-Padilla took her oath as 188th Associate Justice of the Supreme Court (SC) before Chief Justice Diosdado M. Peralta this afternoon at the En Banc Session Hall. Her appointment completes the 15-member roster of the SC. Born on July 2, 1958, she will mandatorily retire on her 70th birthday in 2028.
Justice Baltazar-Padilla graduated magna cum laude and at the top of her class in both her Political Science and Bachelor of Laws degrees, which she both obtained from the Lyceum of the Philippines.
After passing the 1984 Bar Examinations where she placed fifth (5th) with an average of 90.3%, she joined the Puno and Associates Law Office. In 1991, she and her husband Atty. Venancio Padilla set up their own law office.
In 1996, she joined the Judiciary as Presiding Judge of Metropolitan Trial Court Branch 29, Manila until her promotion as Presiding Judge of Regional Trial Court Branch 38, Manila in 2000.
On May 29, 2006, she was appointed as CA Associate Justice. She served as Chairperson of the CA’s Eleventh Division until her appointment to the SC. She filled in the position vacated by Associate Justice Andres B. Reyes, Jr. who retired last May 11, 2020.
Justice Baltazar-Padilla is an educator, having taught at the Lyceum of the Philippines, New Era University, Universidad de Manila, and University of the East for more than 17 years. She is also a lecturer of Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) and member of the faculty of the Philippine Judicial Academy (PHILJA), SC’s educational arm.
She served as Civil Law examiner in the 2019 Bar Examinations together with former Ateneo Law Dean Cynthia R. Del Castillo. She was also a Bar reviewer from 2005 to 2017.
