The National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers (NUPL) has thanked Chief Justice Diosdado M. Peralta for his “swift action” following the grant of a three-day furlough to the activist mother to attend the wake and burial of Baby River.
The Chief Justice had written a memo to the Executive Judge of the Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC) on October 12, 2020 for the latter to cause the immediate resolution of the pending motion for furlough of Reina Mae Nasino.
Chief Justice Peralta said in his memorandum to Manila RTC Executive Judge Virgilio V. Macaraig: “You are hereby directed to cause the immediate resolution of the Very Urgent Motion for Furlough filed by the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers, counsel for Movant Reina Mae Nasino.”
In an email sent to the Office of the Chief Justice (OCJ) at 8:28 P.M. on Tuesday, October 13, 2020, the NUPL, through Atty. Josa Deinla, said: “Please convey our thanks to the Chief Justice for his swift action.”
NUPL said that it welcomes “this small win for the grieving mother” but also expressed concern that while the RTC granted the furlough, the jail warden has appealed the order for purported lack of personnel.
The Manila RTC, Branch 47 on Tuesday granted a three-day furlough to Nasino so she can attend the wake and burial of her baby, River.
As of today, however, the Manila RTC, upon motion of prison authorities, reduced Nasino’s furlough from three straight days to only two days at three hours per day. ###
