Court of Appeals (CA) Acting Presiding Justice Remedios A. Salazar-Fernando is sworn in as CA Presiding Justice by Chief Justice Diosdado M. Peralta at the En Banc Session Hall on Wednesday afternoon. She is joined by her son Atty. John Daniel Fernando and wife Gem.
Justice Salazar-Fernando was appointed to the CA on May 25, 1999. Her public career began in 1978 when she worked as law clerk in the Supreme Court. Thereafter, she served as Supervising Presidential Staff Officer at the Presidential Management Staff of the Office of the President. In 1983, she was appointed Municipal Trial Court (MTC) Judge of Sta. Rita, Pampanga and Acting MTC Judge of Lubao from 1984. She left the Judiciary in 1987 to serve as Chairperson of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), holding in a concurrent capacity as Assistant Secretary of the Land Transportation Office (LTO). In 1992, she was appointed Commissioner of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) and served the poll body until 1998.
She graduated from the College of the Holy Spirit in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree Major in Psychology and from the Ateneo de Manila University with a Bachelor of Law degree in 1977, where she was top 5 in the graduating class. She took and passed the Bar Examinations given that same year.
She was Bar Examiner in Commercial Law in the 2005 Bar Examinations and Legal Ethics and Practical Exercises in the 2010 Bar Examinations. She is a professorial Lecturer II of the Philippine Judicial Academy (PHILJA).
She has served as the appellate court’s acting Presiding Justice following the retirement of CA Presiding Justice Romeo Barza in 2019. (Courtesy of the SC Public Information Office)
