526 Examinees Complete the 17th Shari'ah Bar Exams
March 26, 2022
A total of 526 out of 653 candidates completed the 17th Shari’ah Bar Examinations held on March 20 and 22, 2022 at the University of the Philippines Diliman (UP Diliman) in Quezon City.
Out of 653, only 532 examinees took the test on the first day. On the second day, six more examinees were unable to take the examinations. Thus, only 526 candidates completed the exams.
The 17th Shari’ah Bar Examinations, conducted by the Supreme Court through the Office of the Bar Confidant, were simultaneously held at the College of Engineering, the College of Arts and Letters, the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, and the School of Economics of UP Diliman. The examinations were previously conducted at the Court of Appeals in Manila.
The change in venue was brought about by the successful conduct of the 2020/21 Bar Examinations at UP Diliman, one of the designated testing sites nationwide for the first digitalized and regionalized Bar Examinations held on February 4 and 6 of this year. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the same security, health, and administrative guidelines were observed in the conduct of the 17th Shari’ah Bar Exams as in the regular Bar Exams.
Associate Professor and UP Institute of Islamic Studies Dean Macrina A. Morados is the Chairperson of the 17th Shari’ah Bar Examinations.
Supreme Court Associate Justice Japar B. Dimaampao, the Chairperson of the 16th Shari’ah Bar Examinations, visited the UP testing sites. Justice Dimaampao has been instrumental in ensuring the success of this year’s Shari’ah Bar Examinations.
The conduct of the Shari’ah Bar Examinations at UP Diliman was made possible by the support of Dr. Fidel R. Nemenzo, current Chancellor of UP Diliman, Atty. Edgardo Carlo L. Vistan II, Dean of the UP College of Law, and Dir. Laman M. Piang, Director of Bureau of Muslim Affairs of the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos.
The 17th Shari’ah Bar Examinations also paved the way for the UP Institute of Islamic Studies to re-engage with the UP College of Law and National Commission of Muslim Filipinos in developing projects to improve Muslim Law and to provide services to Muslim constituents, especially in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
The Shari’ah Bar Examinations are administered to allow Muslim professionals to qualify and practice before the Shari’ah Courts in the Philippines constituted under PD 1083, or the Code of Muslim Personal Laws of the Philippines. The Shari’ah courts are courts of justice that have original jurisdiction over cases involving violations of PD 1083. (With a report from the UP Institute of Islamic Studies) The subjects on the first day were Persons, Family Relations and Property; and Jurisprudence (FIQH) and Customary Laws (ADAT), while the subjects on the second day were Procedure in Shari’ah Courts; and Succession, Wills/Adjudication and Settlement of Estate. ###
