April 26, 2023
Chief Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo acknowledged the support and contribution of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) to the reform initiatives of the Supreme Court, including the recently approved Code of Professional Responsibility and Accountability (CPRA).
Speaking as guest of honor at the 25th Regional Convention of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines Bicolandia Region held at Villa Caceres Hotel in Naga City on April 22, 2023, Chief Justice Gesmundo said that as a major partner of the Supreme Court, “the IBP has strongly cooperated in the continuous development of legal practice in the country. Foremost among these developments is the CPRA, which, without doubt, shines as a testament to our shared commitment to integrity and excellence in the profession.” He stressed that the IBP since inception has been a strong partner of the Court in upholding integrity and excellence in the legal profession.
Speaking on CPRA, which was launched on April 13, 2023 at the Manila Hotel, the Chief Justice stressed that it was not a mere revision of the lawyer’s code but “an overhaul on the approach and attitude by lawyers of their ethical responsibility in the new era of law practice. He further stressed that “CPRA distilled the core values underpinning the practice of our profession, and through them, provided us with an encompassing guide in the conduct of our professional lives.”
“Essentially, CPRA captures the core values that all in the legal profession must embody: Independence, Propriety, Fidelity, Competence, Diligence, Equality, and Accountability,” said the Chief Justice as he stressed that CPRA distilled the core values underpinning the practice of the legal profession.
