SC Commemorates 2023 Elderly Filipino Week
October 11, 2023
The Supreme Court has joined this year’s commemoration of Elderly Filipino Week with a two-day physical fitness activity for its elderly employees, reaffirming its commitment to promote inclusivity and to prioritize the health and welfare of every employee.
The Court’s Office of Administrative Services, led by Deputy Clerk of Court and Chief Administrative Officer Atty. Maria Carina A. Matammu-Cunanan, oversaw the commemoration by organizing a Zumba Class for Seniors on October 3 and October 5, 2023 at the Supreme Court gymnasium, 5th floor SC-Court of Appeals Building in Ermita, Manila.
“The Zumba Class for Seniors program showcases the forward-thinking and inclusive approach of the Supreme Court to prioritize the health and vitality of our senior citizens,” said Atty. Cunanan. “Its implementation not only reinforces our commitment to a supportive and engaging work environment but also demonstrates our recognition of the significant contributions and value our senior employees bring to the organization,” she added.
Following the Zumba Class for Seniors program’s huge success, the OAS has already proposed to the Court the establishment of a regular schedule of the said program considering its demonstrated benefits as well as the numerous requests for its continuation.
Atty. Cunanan said the continuation of the program, which enriches recreational opportunity for the Court’s senior personnel, aligns with the Court’s commitment to maintaining a productive workplace and reinforces the Court’s dedication to the health and well-being of all its members.
The said program is also in line with the objective of the Court, under the Strategic Plan for Judicial Innovations 2022-2027 (SPJI), of ensuring that the Judiciary’s primary resource—its officials and employees—are healthy in all aspects.
The country commemorates Elderly Filipino Week annually from October 1 to 7 by virtue of Proclamation No. 470, issued by then-President Fidel Ramos on September 26, 1994. The Proclamation, among others, establishes the country’s obligation to implement a social welfare program supporting the well-being of the elderly.
