Supreme Court Associate Justice Mario V. Lopez, Chairperson of the 2024 Bar Examinations, emphasized to graduating law students the importance of living up to the standards of the legal profession in his message as guest of honor at the Purplehood 2024 ceremony of the Mindanao State University – General Santos City (MSU) College of Law, held on May 26, 2024 at the Greenleaf Hotel in General Santos City.
“No one is compelled to study law and choose the legal profession, but having chosen it, everyone is obliged to live up to the standard of its requirements and its commitment to justice,” remarked Justice Lopez. “Not all people are cut out for this task, but to those of us who have answered the call to pursue law, justice represents a vow that is central to who we are and how we act,” he added.
Urging the graduating law students to keep “J-U-S-T-I-C-E” at the forefront of their minds prior to taking the Bar examinations and embarking on their careers, Justice Lopez reminded them to first be “Just” and be evenhanded and professional in their dealings with everyone. He added that being just also means that the future lawyers take social responsibility seriously, specifically those that concern the rights of the Moros and of the Indigenous Peoples.
Justice Lopez also advised the graduating MSU College of Law students to be Unrelenting,” that they should know how to persevere through challenging times, and to be “Service-minded” and consider it a joy to be able to help the underprivileged, as the Supreme Court will soon roll out the Unified Legal Aid Service (ULAS) Rules. The said Rules will mandate the rendition of pro bono legal aid services by covered lawyers to qualified beneficiaries.
“Be Trustworthy,” added Justice Lopez, putting into focus the Code of Professional Responsibility and Accountability and the New Lawyer’s Oath as he mentioned the importance of propriety, integrity, and accountability as hallmarks of a trustworthy lawyer. He also relayed to the aspiring lawyers the need to be intentional about thinking and developing skills that will enable them to harness modern tools, as he stressed the need to be “Intelligent.”
Emphasizing the need for lawyers to be “Compassionate,” Justice Lopez said: “Without compassion, you cannot put yourself in your client’s shoes or fully understand the issues your client faces. Without compassion, you cannot understand your adversary’s position, anticipate what he will do, and take preemptive steps to benefit your client. Without it, you cannot provide the best solutions.”
Lastly, the Chairperson of this year’s Bar Examinations urged the graduating students to be “Enthusiastic,” to work hard in whatever they do, and to have fun while they are doing it.
Justice Lopez concluded his message by reminding the students that their success will be measured by their dedication and hard work. “Thus, I urge you to give everything you have. Focus, study smart, and avoid distractions. When it’s time to take the Bar Exam, write with confidence and cross the finish line like an Excelsior who is ‘ever upward,’ deserving to be in the noblest profession,” he said.
