Justice Jhosep Y. Lopez
Justice Jhosep Y. Lopez joined the Supreme Court as its 190th Associate Justice on January 25, 2021.
Before joining the Supreme Court, Justice Lopez served as an Associate Justice of the Court of Appeals for almost nine years.
After passing the Bar in 1989, Justice Lopez worked as Legal Counsel of the University of the Philippines (UP) for a year before being promoted as Chief Legal Officer of the UP Manila-Philippine General Hospital. In 1991, he worked as Chief Legal Counsel of the Senate under then Senate President Jovito Salonga. He ran for public office a year later and served as Councilor of the Third District of Manila for four terms. He also held the post of Chief Legal Consultant of then Health Secretary Felipe Estrella, until then Agriculture Secretary Edgardo Angara tapped him to become the Philippines’ first agriculture attaché to Beijing, China. From 2001, he again served as City Councilor of Manila until his appointment as City Prosecutor of Manila in February of 2006. He remained at this post until his appointment to the Court of Appeals in 2012.
Justice Lopez also taught law at the UP College of Law, New Era University College of Law, and the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila College of Law.
Justice Lopez earned his Political Science degree, cum laude, in 1984 from UP Diliman, where he also obtained his law degree in 1988. He was admitted to the Philippine Bar in 1989.
