The Supreme Court marked the success of their art exhibit and sale entitled “Mga Pinta ng Pag-asa Mula sa Puso ng mga PDL” – a sixty-six (66) piece collection of paintings by the artist-residents of the Med and Max Security Compound of the New Bilibid Prison as part of their rehabilitation program – with a new batch of fifty (50) works on inventory.
“We are very happy that we are able to give a platform for persons deprived of liberty (PDL) to showcase not just their talents, but perhaps even more triumphantly, their resolve to live life anew”, said Associate Justice Jose Midas P. Marquez, who personally spearheaded the project and selected the art pieces for exhibition and whose Office has been tasked with organizing and curating the artworks.
With the first batch nearly sold out, it allowed room for another order of works. The clamor for the original pieces testifies to the fact that art can be a powerful form of expression for individuals who are deprived of their liberty. Of the new works, thirty (30) were from the Medium and twenty (20) from the Maximum Security areas of the New Bilibid Prison facility. The artists are from the Kulay Group of Artists, Maximum Security Compound; School of Fine Arts, Education and Training Section, Medium Security Compound; and Work and Livelihood Section, Medium Security Compound.
“Art, just like sports, can be a transformative and empowering form of expression”, Justice Marquez said. “By recognizing and supporting the artistic endeavors of our PDL, we can affirm their dignity and humanity, and promote a more inclusive and compassionate society.”
All proceeds of the “Mga Pinta ng Pag-asa Mula sa Puso ng mga PDL“ art exhibit and sale will go to the PDL-artists. Those interested in purchasing any of the artworks may contact the Office of Associate Justice Jose Midas P. Marquez at (02) 8525-7143.
