“The [Philippines’] accession to five HCCH [Hague Conference on Private International Law] Conventions is in line with the [Supreme] Court’s mission to streamline its legal processes.”
Thus underscored Senior Associate Justice Marvic M.V.F. Leonen, who led the Philippine Judiciary delegation in a visit to the HCCH headquarters in The Hague, the Netherlands on July 14, 2023.
The Philippine Judiciary delegates were received and given briefings by HCCH Deputy Secretary General Dr. Gerardine Goh Escolar during the visit, which was a fitting occasion to mark the 13th anniversary of the Philippines’ membership in the HCCH. The Philippines, which acceded to the HCCH constitutive Convention on July 14, 2010, is signatory to five HCCH instruments: the 1961 Apostille Convention, the 1965 Service Convention, the 1980 Child Abduction Convention, the 1993 Adoption Convention, and the 2007 Child Support Convention.
Senior Associate Justice Leonen highlighted that the Philippines is modernizing its judicial system, which includes simplifying and facilitating cross-border legal transactions.
Joining Senior Associate Justice Leonen were Supreme Court Associate Justices Benjamin S. Caguioa, Rodil V. Zalameda, and Jose Midas P. Marquez. Also present were Philippine Ambassador to the Netherlands J. Eduardo Malaya and Philippine Judicial Academy (PHILJA) Chancellor and retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Rosmari D. Carandang.
Other members of the Philippine delegation were PHILJA officials Dean Sedfrey Candelaria and Dean Emerito I. Enginco; the Supreme Court’s Atty. Antonio Ceasar R. Manila, Atty. Marychelle T. Mendoza, Atty. Krys Valen O. Martinez, and Atty. Luis Jose F. Geronimo; and the Philippine Embassy’s First Secretary and Consul Atty. Jarie R. Osias and Third Secretary and Vice Consul Atty. Marisar Ivy C. Cabatingan. (Photo courtesy of the Philippine Embassy in the Netherlands)
